Personal Development 101: Pinpointing Your Core Values

Personal Development 101: Pinpointing Your Core Values

This whole personal development movement may be completely new to you and that’s OK! Let’s start at the beginning…

The first step in growing from the inside out is zeroing in on your values. Your values are the qualities in life that make you happy and keep you on the path to your North Star.

When you aren’t aligned with your core values, you feel uncomfortable, lethargic, and basically just icky all over.

For example, I used to have a friend that lied about EVERYTHING. She would tell me this elaborate story about her life and then shortly after, I would find out that it was all bullsh*t. I wondered why it bothered me so much… It wasn’t really affecting me directly?

But it was. Her dishonesty was a threat to one of my core values and it completely threw me for a loop.

When your values are being compromised, it can destroy your happiness which is why pinpointing these values is so important. Here are some more of my values:

1. Community
I thrive off of a community of friends and family that support me. I am a very extroverted person and without the people I love, I would be lost. Meeting new people and developing deep relationships is one of my favorite hobbies.

2. Trust
I only surround myself with open, honest people. My inner circle is filled with open, honest people that I would give my life for. Sometimes I am TOO trusting and that definitely gets me into trouble…

3. Creativity
This is especially important when it comes to my profession. If I feel like my creativity is being stifled, I get into a real funk. As a right brainer, being able to express my artistic side is VITAL in my career.

4. Freedom
I am a claustrophobic person physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I need the independence to roam and live life on my terms or else I’m a real biotch. Kind of like when I am hungry.

5. Service
Helping others is HUGE in my life. The satisfaction I get from seeing another person happy fills me with an overwhelming amount of joy. This is what keeps me going and hustling.

What are your core values? Pick 5 from the list here and think about whether you’re living up to these values.

Your twenties is the perfect time to explore what really matters to you in life and it can set you up for success down the road. Once you get into alignment, your North Star will shine brighter than ever.

Love this! Friends + family are so important to me, too. Also using my voice to empower others around me. I def want to sit down and write out a “personal values” statement!

I love this, thanks for reminding me the importance of taking care of myself and focusing on my personal beliefs and cores. I’m sure doing that will bring better clarity to life in general.

Wow! Your list of core values is 100% the same core values I would choose. Family, Honesty/Trust, Living Free, Helping Others, and Being creative are all VERY important to my sanity.

I love this, I’m still trying to work out who I really am, but I know that Freedom, Loyalty and Compassion would be high on my list. I just have a few more to work out xx

This is a great post and one that a lot of people don’t often think about. Having your core values and being aware of them is such a huge part of your own personal development! Thanks for sharing (and reminding me!)

  • Our Irish Family

I’ve never given much thought to my core values before, however, I do know ‘family’ would be a major one now. It’s funny before I had my baby I would not have thought ‘family’ was a major aspect of my independent life, but it really is, I would be lost without their support. Thanks for sharing.

  • I am shocked and disgusted by what is happening in our country today.
.
This division saddens me to my core.

Instead of fighting fire with fire, let's fight fire with peace.

Be kind to one another and lead with love instead of hate. .
Our country depends on it.
